Welcome to one of the most quietly powerful places in all of Macao. The Protestant Cemetery might not have the grandeur of the Ruins of St. Paul's or the golden shimmer of a Chinese temple, but step through its iron gates and you will find yourself in the middle of an extraordinary story about the first Westerners who dared to make a life in China. This small, shaded burial ground was established in 1821, tucked beside the lush greenery of Camoes Garden. For centuries, Macao was the only European foothold on the coast of China, and the people buried here were among the earliest traders, missionaries, diplomats, and adventurers to arrive in East Asia. Back then, the Catholic Portuguese authorities did not allow Protestants to be buried in consecrated ground, so the British East India Company purchased this plot to give their dead a proper resting place. Walk slowly among the weathered headstones and you will encounter some remarkable names. Robert Morrison lies here, the first Protestant missionary to China, who spent twenty-five years painstakingly compiling the very first Chinese-English dictionary.
