Welcome to Camoes Garden, the oldest and perhaps most beloved park in all of Macao. This lush, shaded retreat covering more than twenty-six thousand square metres has been a place of rest and reflection for centuries, and it carries within its winding paths one of the great literary legends of the Portuguese-speaking world. The garden is named after Luis de Camoes, Portugal's greatest poet, who lived in the sixteenth century and is often compared to Shakespeare or Dante in his importance to Portuguese culture. Camoes spent part of his turbulent life in the East, and tradition holds that he lived in Macao around 1558 to 1559, during which time he reportedly worked on his masterpiece, Os Lusiadas, an epic poem celebrating the Portuguese voyages of discovery. Deep within the garden, you will find the Camoes Grotto, a rocky alcove shaded by enormous banyan trees where a bronze bust of the poet sits in quiet contemplation. Whether Camoes actually sat in this exact spot and wrote his verses is a matter of historical debate, but the legend has become inseparable from the place.
