Welcome to Macau Fisherman's Wharf, a place that tries to squeeze a trip around the world into a single waterfront stroll. Now, this is not your typical heritage site, but it tells you a great deal about modern Macao's ambition and its love of spectacle. Opened in 2005, Fisherman's Wharf was the brainchild of Stanley Ho, the legendary casino magnate who dominated Macao's gaming industry for decades. Ho envisioned a free-entry entertainment complex that would give visitors something to enjoy beyond the gaming tables. And his vision was nothing if not bold. The complex sprawls across more than one hundred thousand square metres of reclaimed waterfront land near the Outer Harbour ferry terminal. It is divided into three themed zones, each more eclectic than the last. The Dynasty Wharf zone draws on Chinese heritage with a massive replica of a Tang Dynasty fortress and a sprawling Chinese garden. Then you cross into the East Meets West zone, where you will find buildings inspired by Portuguese, Dutch, and Cape Town colonial architecture, a nod to all the trading nations that once passed through these waters.
