Rising twenty metres above the waters of the Outer Harbour, the bronze figure of Kun Iam is one of the most striking sights on Macao's waterfront. And the story behind this statue is every bit as fascinating as the statue itself. Kun Iam is the Chinese name for Guanyin, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, one of the most beloved deities across East Asia. But here is what makes this particular statue so special. It was designed not by a Chinese artist, but by a Portuguese sculptor named Cristina Rocha Leiria. A Portuguese woman sculpting a Chinese goddess for a city that belongs to both cultures. That is Macao in a single gesture. The statue was inaugurated on March twentieth, 1999, just nine months before the handover of Macao from Portugal to China on December twentieth of the same year. Its timing was deliberate. This was meant to be a symbol of continuity, of spiritual harmony, and of the deep cultural fusion that defines this city.
