Tucked away on a gentle hillside in one of Macao's loveliest residential neighbourhoods, St. Lawrence's Church has been a place of prayer, hope, and quiet beauty for over four hundred and sixty years. This is one of the three oldest parishes in Macao, and it carries within its walls the hopes and heartbreaks of generations of Portuguese families who called this distant territory home. The Jesuits first established a chapel on this site before 1560, making it one of the earliest Christian places of worship in all of China. The original structure was modest, built of wood, but as Macao grew in wealth and importance as a trading port between China, Japan, and Europe, the church was rebuilt and expanded several times. The elegant Neo-Classical building you see today dates from a major reconstruction in 1846, though it incorporates elements from earlier periods. Step back and take in the facade. Twin bell towers rise symmetrically on either side, topped with finials that catch the afternoon light.
