The Dom Pedro V Theatre, completed in 1860, is one of the very first Western-style theatres in all of East Asia, and stepping through its doors feels like walking into a miniature European opera house that has been gently set down on a hillside in southern China. The theatre was built by the local Portuguese community as a place of culture and social gathering. They named it after King Pedro V of Portugal, a young monarch who was known for his intellectual interests and his support of the arts. At the time of its construction, Macao was a thriving Portuguese outpost, and the European residents wanted a proper venue for concerts, operas, and theatrical performances. What they created was something remarkable for its time and place. The Neo-Classical facade is instantly recognisable. Painted in a distinctive combination of green and white, with tall columns framing the entrance portico and elegant arched windows on the upper floor, it strikes a graceful pose on St. Augustine's Square.
