You are standing at the exact spot where Macao's story began. Right here, on this stretch of waterfront opposite the ancient A-Ma Temple, Portuguese sailors dropped anchor for the very first time in 1553. They asked local fishermen what this place was called, and the fishermen, thinking they meant the temple, replied A-Ma-Gao, the Bay of A-Ma. The Portuguese heard Macau, and a name was born that would echo across five centuries of history. The Maritime Museum occupies a building shaped like a sailing vessel, which is a lovely touch for a place dedicated to the sea. Inside, you will discover that Macao's relationship with the ocean goes back far longer than the Portuguese arrival. For centuries before any Europeans showed up, Cantonese and Fujianese fishing communities worked these waters, developing sophisticated boat-building techniques and navigation skills passed down through generations. The museum displays beautifully crafted models of traditional Chinese junks, dragon boats, and the sampans that still bob in the Inner Harbour today. Then the story shifts to the Age of Exploration, when Portuguese caravels began threading their way along the coast of Africa, across the Indian Ocean, and into the South China Sea.
